Preparing Your Toddler For Kindergarten

Going to kindergarten is a big step and can be stressful if your little one isn't ready

. A different environment, new people and unusual experiences can be daunting to a five year old, so it's a good idea to begin preparing your toddler for kindergarten well before class begins.

Spend some time apart. Kids who are with parents or a close relative every day tend to have a more difficult time adjusting to kindergarten than those who attend daycare. If your little one isn't used to an away from home environment, you might want to consider enrolling him or her in preschool the year before kindergarten begins.

Spend time teaching your toddler the basics. Reading books, practicing ABC's and counting, as well as learning how to use glue and scissors will give your child a head start in kindergarten. It also teaches about listening and being still during lessons.

Talk about kindergarten. Get your little one used to the idea well before the big day arrives. Discuss what the class will be like, the fun activities they will get to do and new friends they will make. Also touch on rules, such as sitting at a desk and raising a hand before speaking.

Encourage your toddler to play dirty. It's a parent's instinct to protect their child from germs, but playing in the dirt is actually beneficial. Microbes found in soil help strengthen the immune system, which is something that your child will benefit from in kindergarten.

Have a positive attitude. You may be dreading the separation or the idea of your child getting older, but don't let your little one hear you talk about these things. Toddlers listen more closely than we realize and hearing negative comments can make kindergarten seem like a scary experience.

Kindergarten is a fun and exciting rite of passage, but it can be hard on kids if they're not well-equipped for it. Taking steps to prepare your toddler ahead of time helps ensure that the experience is a good one and sets your child up for years of academic success.
