Preparing the nursery

There's so much to do before the stork delivers your bundle of joy, where do you start? When the celebrations have subsided a little, you'll need to think about kitting out the nursery.

No doubt you'll be re-decorating the spare room and turning it into a perfect sanctuary of calm for your little one, but bear in mind different colours can have different effects on a baby. Colour therapists have remarked that certain shades can improve emotional and intellectual development, encourage sharing (with siblings) and aid sleep.

Pastel shades are traditionally favoured and for good reason: babies have a lot of adjusting to do in this new, big world and pale blues, pinks or yellows can create a soothing environment. Red, yellow and orange are warm, stimulating colours, the blue palette is calming and green can be harmonising, due to its association with nature.

Avoid busy patterns which will distract and encourage hyperactivity. Subtle peach, pink or coral on the ceiling, experts say, foster a peaceful and tranquil environment and a feeling of safety and security.

Then there's the kit.

Newborn babies will sleep in a Moses basket until they're old enough to move to a cot. Usually made from wicker, some come with a stand but all should have sturdy carry handles, a fitted sheet, canopy and coverlet. Make sure you get one with a wipe clean mattress.

Cots don't vary hugely but every baby needs one. Parents can choose between one drop side or two and may like to consider a model that converts into a 'big boy/girl' toddler bed. Many cots come as part of a range, enabling you to purchase coordinating furniture which makes the nursery look pretty, such as change tables, wardrobes and drawer units.

Prams, however, do vary. There are a range of models available to suit a family's needs. Three-wheeler off-road prams are great for those that live in the country or lead active lives, often fitted with pneumatic tyres.

For those that spend a lot of time in the car, a baby transportation system might be more appropriate. This is effectively a car seat that fits into a solid frame to become a pushchair. Alternatively, there is the more traditional forward facing, four wheeled buggy.

Don't forget to buy a nursing chair. For those long nights spent feeding baby, a comfortable and supportive chair is essential. Some rock gently, others come with a foot stool, most should incorporate a breast-feeding pillow. Make sure the arms are covered with soft, padded material and the chair is tall enough to provide head, back and neck support. A recliner is best.

The list of objects required for a new baby are seemingly endless, these are just a few of the most important and probably biggest purchases you will need to make. Consider your requirements carefully and ensure the product you choose is best suited to your needs.
