The first step towards better vacation prepping techniques--and increased home security--is making sure that you securely shut and lock all potential entry points to the house. Whether it's windows, garage doors, or regular doors, be sure that they are all shut firmly, and then locked. For those who have invested in some sort of system or alarm, the only way that your technological assistance can help while you're on the road is if all doors and windows are securely closed. So be sure to do so for that as well.

Inside of your home, there are other concerns besides keeping robbers out. If you have a plethora of electronics all plugged into single extension cord units, be sure to unplug them. Try to turn off items you're not going to be using, and take particular care in shutting off irons for clothing and hair, coffee makers and other kitchen devices, and anything with faulty wiring. While a robbery can bring a whole lot of trouble, so can any kind of fire in your home while you're gone.

For those families who have invested in a home alarm system, remembering to set it is a crucial step before driving off for an exciting vacation. Without the alarm turned on, you aren't going to have that extra protection that you need against would-be robbers. So take the couple of seconds necessary to make sure your alarm is on, and then get on the road to enjoying your time off. After all, just a few simple steps before you decide to take off can mean the difference between a welcoming house to return to, and something a bit more troubling when you finally get back.
