Preschool activities are important for your child's overall development

"Children who attend high-quality preschool enter kindergarten with better pre-reading skills

, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills than those who do not," says W. Steven Barnett, National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) director. This explains the increasing number of kids getting enrolled in preschool. According to NIEER in 2005 more than two-thirds of 4-year-olds and more than 40 percent of 3-year-olds were enrolled in a preschool.

Now the question arises what will my child learn in a preschool?

In addition to developing language skills, gross and fine motor skills, problem solving abilities, preschool activities teach your children social skills. Kids are introduced to traits like sharing, cooperating, bonding with others and making friends that will help them in later life.

Often, it's been noticed that kids when at homes only engage in activities that are enjoyed by their parents or the activities that their parents are good at. For instance, parents who are good at sports will participate in activities that will develop gross skills like playing with balls or riding bicycles but perhaps neglect activities like reading storybooks together or listening to music. To achieve wholesome development of your child it's important to engage in a variety of activities which sometimes do not take place at home.

In a preschool, your child will engage in various activities that will keep him cognitively, socially, physically and artistically active and engaged. The purpose of these preschool activities is to make the kids aware that they are capable and can do things for themselves -- from small tasks eating their food on their own, helping set snack tables to making decisions about how to spend their free time.

Some of the indoor preschool activities include painting, dancing, reading story books, flower arranging, cooking snack and playing dice games.

Preschool activities are not always confined to the four walls of the classroom. Playing balls, riding tricycle in the park all constitute preschool activities. There are a lot of outdoor experiences like a visit to a zoo, plant conservatory or a museum make for excellent way to teach kids about plants, animals and yes a bit of history too. In addition to the educational value, it is also a fun experience for the children.
