Printer Cartridges - 9 Tips To Make Them Last

Printer cartridges can cost more than the printer itself

. So thrifty businesses and individual users are always on the lookout for ways to make their cartridges last. Follow these tips to get the most out of the printer cartridges:

#1. If possible, don't print.

If the information can be shared in a different format such as a .pdf file or a picture that can be emailed or uploaded to the internet, doing this will save printer cartridges and paper.

#2. Always use the print preview option before printing.

By looking at the page to be printed, any stray words or unnecessary graphics can be eliminated. If printing spreadsheets, try not to print gridlines or eliminate as many as possible. Every letter, mark, picture or image that is not printed saves ink.

#3. Use the draft or economy option and fonts that require less ink.

This option is found under printer system preferences. It allows the document to be printed in a lower resolution, which means less ink is put on the page. But the document should still be completely satisfactory. There are hundreds of fonts to use when printing document. The internet can be an excellent source of information about which fonts use more or less ink. Look for fonts in 'light' or 'narrow' in the name.

#4. Print test pages sparingly.

If the print preview function is used with high magnification, fewer test pages will be needed. Thus ink will be saved and the printer cartridges will have a longer life.

#5. Don't print pictures.

Pictures use tremendous amounts of ink, particularly expensive colored ink. Rather than printing pictures to share with family and friends, they can be uploaded to a photo-sharing internet site. They can also be modified and rendered into smaller file sizes and sent via email.

#6. Don't buy the printer manufacturer's cartridges.

There are three types of lower priced printer cartridges. One type is refilled cartridges which have been refilled using ink refill kits. Another type is remanufactured cartridges which are the original manufacturer's cartridges that have been refurbished and refilled with generic ink. The third type is compatible cartridges that are new cartridges made by a third party to fit the printer's specifications. These cartridges usually have more ink than the original manufacturer's cartridges and cost much, much less.

#7. Turn off the printer.

The printer should be turned off when not in frequent use because the ink in the printer cartridge can dry out.

#8. Choose the correct paper for the job.

The wrong paper will absorb more ink, will more easily smear the ink and will not present the colors to their best advantage. This is particularly important for photos. Plain copier paper will make photos look muddy and dull. Too much ink will be wasted saturating the paper.

#9. Don't shake the cartridge.

Shaking doesn't loosen the ink in the printer cartridge. It might actually damage the printhead or the sensor chips in the cartridge.

Follow these nine tips and save money on printer cartridges.
