Proper Area Rug Cleaning Techniques
If your home has beautiful tile or hardwood flooring you no doubt use area rugs and
runners to protect the high-traffic areas from receiving excess wear. Area rugs and runners add to the beauty of a home's decor as well as protect floors from uneven wear. Naturally, since they are put in the areas of the home where they will receive the most use they tend to collect the most dirt and stains beyond the ability of home cleaning products to handle. Homeowners must be cautious about area rug cleaning when the rugs are located on hardwood floors or even granite or marble tile floors, since water or cleaning chemicals used on rugs could damage the floors the rugs were meant to protect.
What to Do If Cleaning Just Spots is Not an Option
Rented steam cleaners are used to clean area rugs, but it's unwise to use the bulky steam cleaners on rugs that are smaller than 9' x 12' in size. The cleaners are heavy and often costly to rent, since they are made to clean larger surfaces. There are smaller home steam cleaners and they are the preferred choice for homeowners with area rugs. Other methods could bleach the rug or cause some fading to the colors. Mixed colors on area rugs could actually run if the rug is not cleaned properly. When steam cleaning area rugs, there is a certain amount of moisture and it can seep through if the user does not follow the directions properly or there is too much water.
The solution is a smaller cleaner--a home steam cleaner. Using steam to clean the rug is much safer than harsh cleaners that may use bleaching agents that could ruin the rug's colors. A rug you selected specifically for its beautiful colors and patterns could end up faded or blotchy. Steam will not harm hardwood floors since there is no water flowing, just steam. Of course, steam can condense into water so care must be taken to not leave any stray moisture on the hardwood floor during cleaning of the rug. A small home steam cleaner can be used over and over rather than a rental which must be returned and re-rented.
Gentle Stain Removal Tips
Before you decide to go out and purchase a steamer for your area rug cleaning job, there are a few home remedies you can try on your rug in order to remove certain stains. Club soda mixed with an equal part of baking soda makes a great paste for lifting out red wine stains. In fact, this method often works better than simply steam cleaning, since the soda reacts with the dyes that are used in red foods to literally lift them out of the carpet.
