Proper Brushing And Flossing For Optimal Dental Hygiene

This school year, make it a priority to maintain proper oral hygiene and keep all of your teeth shining bright every day

. Both your natural teeth and teeth with restorations survive best in an oral environment that is clean and where the intake of harmful foods is controlled. Healthy teeth affect nearly every aspect of your lives and as winter is just around the corner, it is important to not let your good hygiene habits hibernate. With parties, dinners, shopping, holiday celebrations and altered schedules, it is often difficult to remember all of the tasks that are routine in the up-coming "off months." There is no reason to forget to practice good oral hygiene. With all of the starchy, sugary treats present that could wreak havoc on dental health, make it a priority to properly brush and floss your teeth every day.

The Basics of Brushing

Brushing is one of the most effective methods for removing harmful plaque from your teeth and gums. By removing the debris off your teeth and gums in a timely manner, you will be able to prevent bacteria in the food that you eat from turning into harmful, cavity causing acids. Most dentists agree that brushing two times a day is the minimum and if you use fluoride toothpaste in the morning and before bed at night time, you can get away without using toothpaste during the middle of the day.

Place your toothbrush beside your teeth at a 45-degree angle and gently brush teeth in an elliptical motion. Brush the outside of your teeth, inside the teeth, your tongue, chewing surfaces and between your teeth. Using back and forth motions causes the gum surface to recede, and can expose the root surface or make the root surface tender, risking the wearing down the gum line. Effective brushing typically takes approximately three minutes.

Choosing a Toothbrush

Today, there is a wide array of toothbrushes on the market, so how do you know which one to choose? Angled heads, raised bristles, oscillating tufts and handles that change colors when you use them - you name it, they are made. Toothbrushes come in all shapes, colors and sizes, promising to perform better than the rest.

Mechanical toothbrushes, also called electrical, power or automated, feature brush heads that are made of nylon bristles or tufts that move in a powerful way to effectively remove plaque and food debris from teeth and gums. They vary by brush head configuration, size, speed, design, cost and convenience features, such as timers. It is important to note that each device has its own unique mechanism of action, and research findings for one product may not apply to another. They also provide multiple benefits to different people and are ideal for the elderly, people with arthritis, and patients with special needs. Additionally, mechanical brushes are recommended for those with braces, poor oral hygiene habits and caregivers who brush other people's teeth.

The Basics of Flossing

Flossing is a method for removing bacteria and other debris that cannot be reached with a toothbrush. It typically requires a thin piece of synthetic cord you insert and move up and down between the sides of two adjoining teeth. Many dentists believe that flossing is the single most important weapon against plaque and is a proven method for complementing your brushing routine, helping to prevent cavities, periodontal disease, and other dental problems later in life. By flossing your teeth daily, you increase the chances of keeping your teeth for a lifetime and decrease your chance of having periodontal (gum) disease and tooth decay.

Make an appointment with your dentist in Virginia Beach every six months for proper care, in addition to daily brushing and flossing. Your dentist will be able to put together an appropriate dental hygiene plan to help keep you smiling longer.
