Proper VA (Virtual Assistant) Attitude That Leads to a Successful VA Career
I've been in online solutions for over six years and believe me when I say I've seen virtual solutions at its worst and at its best.
If you're a newbie on this trade and would want to gain some leverage with your competition, here are some tips that can help you as you start your new chosen career:
1) Be Yourself
One common mistake that most VA newbie's (and hustlers at that) make as they start building a relationship with their foreign counterpart is that they always want to hide their true self. Why say "yes" to something that you personally know you can't do. Never lie just to get the job. What usually happens is virtual assistants always fear rejection so they tend to jack up their expertise on interview to lure the client to acquiring their services. The consequence of this is that clients would expect too much from the Virtual Assistant (VA) and end up getting frustrated because the guy can't deliver.
In my opinion, keeping a low profile always does the trick. I'd say I understand or have encountered such task but would never say I'm an expert on it. This would lessen too much expectation as you build your working relationship with your client. It's natural for clients to try and squeeze out everything from you considering that they're paying you with hard earned money. To boast of your skills would only make things difficult for you because they'd over expect and you turn out under delivering.
2) Never be too complacent
Keep in mind that working virtually is not always the same as working in an office. Most VA wannabe's would think that just because they're not "actually" supervised while working they can do almost everything they want.
This may perhaps be true on certain cases but it's not something that you should overlook in the long run.
Distractions, though acceptable, should be kept to a minimum. Learn how to manage your time. Never make your client think or have the slightest notion that you're taking advantage of them. That's not the way to build a good relationship.
3) Meet Halfway
While your in it for the money, it would never hurt to meet halfway with your foreign counterparts. I never did like the idea of dwelling on the money factor so much. These people come to people like us for a reason. While I do agree that pegging a price on your craft is just right, try and consider if the task being given to you fits the price that you're asking for. There are times that tasks are so easy that you can give a discount.
4) Transparency
I like keeping a transparent relationship with my clients. I believe thatby doing so, I'm giving them a piece of myself making them feel secure with dealing with me.
I've had clients come and go but up to this very moment, I can't really say that I'm marketing my services to people. Most of my clients are referrals which I feel is a good thing. This strategy has paid off a lot for me.
Doing virtual work is truly a great experience for me. I can say it has honed me to being who I am now more confident and competitive.
