Properly Caring For Your Fishing Equipment
Winter can be very harsh on fishing equipment whether or not it is stored inside or used extensively in the harsh weather conditions
. Either way, your fishing equipment will need to be inspected, cleaned and repaired by the end of every winter.
One of the first types of equipment that you will need to check are your fishing rods. Your rods will either work properly or they will not.
However, you do not want to get out into the middle of Alaskan wilderness and discover that they do not work properly. Even your rods are working properly they will need to be examined for potential future problems.
The winter grime will also need to be cleaned off of them. In particular, make sure that you clean the reel seat.
A dirty reel seat can make it hard to properly use the lock down rings. This area is especially prone to collecting dirt.
One of the best solutions to sue to clean your rod is a mild dish detergent. A toothbrush is also a useful tool for cleaning out all of the nooks and crannies in your fishing rod.
Be sure that you check the guides for damage as well. Fishing rods are more susceptible to damage and breaking in Alaska because of the size of the fish that can be caught.
The large size of fish makes it necessary to use large flies and lead to reach the deep waters. These extra weights and strong fish can put extra wear and tear on the fishing pole.
Rods should be stored in a hard case with a fabric sleeve. If a rod is stored without a fabric sleeve, it will bump around in the hard case, which will wear on the surface.
These worn spots on the surface will weaken the rod over time. Be sure to check for this kind of damage on your rod.
As you are inspecting your rod, you will also want to check to make sure your reel is working properly. Although the quality of reels has improved throughout the years to make them increasingly more reliable, they still require a properly cleaning, like everything else.
Again, a mild dish detergent and a tooth brush are excellent for cleaning the reel of your rod. It is likely that you had to use some kind of lubricant on your reel throughout the past year.
The lubricants are sticky and dirt tends to collect to the areas on which you used lubricant. As a result it is necessary to clean the areas you used lubricant on thoroughly.
Before you put the reel away, make sure it is stored properly. It should be completely dry and compression and hardening of the drag surfaces should be avoided by turning the drag so it is completely backed off.
Another part of the rod that you should make sure is undamaged and clean is the lines. The advanced technology and knowledge of today has made it increasingly easier to pick the line up, mend, and control.
The lines of today also float much better than ever throughout history. However, natural factors such as dirt, silt, algae and so forth when attached to the line can make it sink.
As a result it is necessary that your line is clean. If you are working with commercial lines, there are many commercial line cleaners available for purchase.
The commercial cleaners can also be used at home, but dish soap and warm water are as effective as commercial cleaner and much cheaper. When you are ready to clean your line, pull the line off onto the floor.
Then, put the backing end of the fly line onto the soapy rag and firmly hold it in one hand. Carefully pull the line from the backing end through the rag until the line is clean.
After the line is clean, you will want to pull it through a fresh rag with only water so that there is not soapy residue on the line. When the line is completely clean, it is best if you apply commercial line dressing to it.
The commercial line dressing will help protect it from damage and from becoming dirty too quickly. While you are cleaning you will want to check for potential breakage points such as nicks and abrasions.
With properly cared for equipment, you will be ready for a new fishing season. Prepared with this equipment, you will find success in the broad waters of Alaska.
