Properly Train A Dog Not To Bark
Barking is part of a dogs natural behavior
Barking is part of a dogs natural behavior. You obviously don't want your dog not to bark at all. There are times when his barking is needed. The problem comes when the dog barking becomes a nuisance. Dogs back for different reasons. He backs to get attention when left alone for a long period, when bored or do to lack of exercise. Use following simple ways to train your dog not to bark unnecessarily.
First, most dogs bark because they have not been given obedience training. Some owners also have overtime been rewarding and reinforcing there dog's barking. The first thing to do therefore is to give your dog basic obedience training. You can get dog training resources and do it by yourself or get a professional to train him for you. Barking could also be caused by a discomfort. Therefore, check to make sure he has food, water and check for other discomfort. Also make sure he is getting enough daily exercise.
The best method is to use a combination of action and command. When your dog starts barking, move close to him, point your hand and say quite! Repeat until he becomes quite. If this doesn't work then add the water method. When he starts barking, point your hand, say quite and sprinkle some water on his face. This will make him associate backing with a negative result. Reward him with a treat when he obeys.
Another method is the change of location/distraction method. If the command and water method does not work then use this method. When he is barking, bring out his collar and chain, quietly take him to a quiet part of your house where he will be alone and leave him there for some time. Bring him back after about 10 minutes.
The last result is to buy a citronella no-bark collar. The collar sprays citronella that dogs don't like anytime he barks. He quickly learns that it is his barking that brings the spray and stops. As with any form of dog training, you have to be patient and consistent to get results.
