Tradition is something that exists far beyond what normally comes to mind. Images of ancient rites, of abstract or even violet rituals come to mind for me. But for most it's something associated with religion or family. But the notion of tradition is something with much farther reaching applications. I'm referring to the tradition in the work force. The tradition found in trade.

There is hardly a discipline in the world without its own language, otherwise known as jargon. The reason for this is not only because jargon like high vocabulary, simplifies and shortens communication, thus making communication more efficient, but on a more subtle level, it also represents and expresses and kinship and sense of fraternity. This allows for workers in the same field to identify with each other not only through words and knowledge, but through shared experiences.

In addition to all of this there is tradition. Tradition is a way of connecting not only to a trade but to all of the people who have ever worked in the trade. Just like certain songs evoke strong bonds of camaraderie in the military other triads and professions have their ways of celebrating tradition.

The reason why I bring up tradition is because this innocuous or even beneficial aspect of trade and industry was under tremendous threat and still is since the rise of the industrial revolution.

Although the industrial revolution had major effects on the world and international economy, people found it to be threatening and even corrosive to certain values and traditions.

Having steel robotic arms and spinning harvesting blades replace the tender touch of artisans or farm boys who learned their respective trade for their fathers who learned it from their fathers was a an assault no only on their livelihood but on their families and on nostalgia itself.

The art of weaving that might have resulted in a blanket or carpet or dress form was as sentimental as a thanksgiving dinner to some people. So when the apathetic arms of mechanized industry started reaching in to family traditions and community fraternity, it was war.

In the end industry won. Drinking milk that was made by farmer john down the way has been replaced by cold steel factories with steel unthinking pumps, and all the love of labor no longer makes it to your breakfast table. But in balance, the final result is that an exchange was made. Nostalgia for bounty and sentimentality for lower prices and despite the waning of the old ways the present is ours and w must establish our own memories and learn to celebrate them.
