Protect Your Voice From Bad Beginners Singing Lessons
Protect Your Voice From Bad Beginners Singing Lessons
There is an awful lot of information online about beginners singing lessons. Most of it is aimed at a general audience. But expert music teachers will tell you that you need to be careful with your voice. What is good for adult singers is not so good for younger ones. Here's why.
Protecting your voice, or that of your child, begins with knowledge. The best voice teachers tell you that you should listen to many teachers before choosing one. Their sound is what you will end up with, and you want it to be good. So picking the teacher that has vocal qualities you admire is a good tip.
Your lessons should always include instruction about proper breathing. You should be taught about the diaphragm, and how to use the muscles it contains correctly. Beginners should always be taught to breathe properly as part of first instruction. Good vocal sound is all about great breathing. No breath control equals poor sound. Using a hand on the abdomen to feel the rise and fall of the diaphragm is common. Generations of singers have filled rooms with the sound of their voices, without using microphones, because they had control of their breath.
Shoulders should remain level when breathing in properly. Lying down flat on your back to see what part of the abdomen rises while breathing deeply is another good technique for finding the right breathing muscles. Some professional singers use this posture as part of preparing their voice muscles to sing.
Never allow any voice teacher to force your voice, or that of your child, to sing more loudly than you feel capable. Loud sounds unsupported by good air flow may cause damage to tender vocal chords. Do not allow your child to sound like mature singers. Mature voice sounds should come along with mature bodies.
Though probably everyone has heard a child prodigy belting out a tune in a mature sounding voice, the actual normal voice range for the very young is actually high. Children naturally sing with a high and light sounding voice. They also tend to breathe correctly when young, and if they are taught to combine natural breathing with natural singing, the result is quite spectacular. Do not allow your child to study with a teacher who insists on formal training of the vocal chords. This should not begin until puberty. Up until then, children should study breathing, posture, diction, creating open vowel sounds, reading musical notation, performing in an ensemble, and learning lots of choral music. When this path is taken, vocal music will stay with them for their entire life.
Knowing that the voice is said to not mature until the middle 40's, will give you confidence to begin study even late in life. Beginners singing lessons should actually train your body to protect your voice so that it will last even into old age. Once you have the basics learned, you most likely will be able to enjoy using your voice the rest of your life.
