Water is a beautiful thing but its also a dangerous one

You may love nothing better than getting away from land for a peaceful day spent sailing or fishing, but you should remember that the water and the extreme weather and temperature conditions you may encounter while sailing can be deadly. Land temperatures tend to stay fairly stable, without extreme changes or sudden rises and drops; but temperature changes on the water can be much more dramatic, switching from a balmy breeze to an icy blow in mere seconds. Factor in UV light which can reflect off water and cause significant skin damage and the danger of hypothermia from a sudden, unexpected dousing in cold water (believe me, you dont want to die from hypothermia) and that carefree day on a boat suddenly looks much less inviting. Its a good thing that protective foul weather clothing was invented ranging from cheap Gill jackets to sturdy sea boots, and including a wide range of protective head, hand, foot and thermal under-gear. Your foul weather gear may mean the difference between life and death for you and thats a very good reason to invest in the best protective clothing you can find.

When you go out on a boat, you should always expect to get wet. (This is a rule of thumb that we really wish more people would remember.) Thankfully, you no longer have to suit up in a heavy, unwieldy jacket to enjoy a simple day on the water modern materials like Goretex combine wind and weather-proof fabric with moisture wicking capabilities while getting rid of some of that unnecessary weight. The important thing to remember about even the best foul-weather jacket is that its not thermal. Sea jackets are designed to keep out extreme wind and water and keep you dry but not warm. In order to keep your body heat up, youll need to be sure to wear extensive layers of underclothing. Thermal underwear usually works well for a first layer, while several layers of synthetic or wool sweaters will hold in the remaining heat. Always choose wool or synthetic fabrics over cotton, which quickly gets uncomfortably heavy and wet. (Unfortunately, this means that your favorite pair of jeans will not be a good choice.) For pants, pick thermal or moisture-wicking exercise pants and make sure you encase your feet in several thick layers of wool socks.
