Proto-punk Garage-rock band from California releases new EP

With buzzsaw riffs and powerpop sensibility, DIY rockers Deathbear pack as much sonic mayhem they can fit into nine tracks of protopunk glory with their first album Hide and Seek, released today on Expat Records.

Deathbear is a three piece band made up of long time friends Chris Mariscal, drums, Aaron Swink, guitar, and Shea Kelly, bass. The members of Deathbear come from all different musical backgrounds and run the gamut of musical influences, lending a unique melodic and multi-rhythmic approach to their compositions. "These are songs about people we all know, places we've all been and experiences we've all had", says bass player Kelly. Deathbear is founded on these

friendships and connections.

Chris Marsical grew up the child of a classically trained pianist and an avid guitarphile. At the age of ten, his father gave him his first guitar, but it wasn't until a few years later when his friends also started playing (more specifically, started playing better than him) that he started taking music seriously and has spent most of his adult life playing all over California with various bands, even having a short stint as a session player for Warner Bros. Records. In addition to Deathbear, still plays shows with novelty hardcore specialists Tabernacle. Aaron Swink's approach to music has always been based around exploration. Being self taught, Aaron has a unique ear for hearing melodies and approaching composition. Aaron also took to playing synthesizer in the pop-synth band Maxi Zoon Dweebies around the same time. Aaron's guitar influences include Isaac Brock, Omar Rodriguez and Doug Martsch.

After moving from Colorado to Austin, Shea Kelly quickly learned musical competitiveness and was successful on the Austin circuit for a time. After moving to Seattle, Shea found a steady paying gig as guitarist in an Aerosmith cover band. The constant rain of Seattle proved more depressing than the joy of playing and gigging with a professional band, so she moved to California's Central Coast and started Dirty Pink Slips, an all girl act. Shea has spent the past three extremely busy years performing

with DPS, Deathbear, and has toured the all over the country with Bad Assets. Her major influences are Frank Zappa, Tony Williams, Matt Holliman and Evan Reiss.
