Proven Voice Over Techniques
Successful voice-over artists are the most famous
, anonymous people in the country. They are employed by motion picture studios to sell movies, animation studios to create characters, advertising agencies to sell products, political consultants to create politician's images, corporations to narrate corporate communications, documentary filmmakers to tell their stories, televisions networks to promote programming, radio conglomerates to promote radio stations and voice radio shows, and publishers to bring to life recorded books.
Here are some voice over techniques which will help you to be effective voice over artist:
1. Manipulate the pitch of your voice
These following exercises will allow you to properly use your voice.
a. Humming exercise
This exercise will help you to understand how to go from low pitch to high pitch level smoothly. It will also help you to assess your vocal capabilities and range. Begin humming with normal speak level, then go up with higher pitch and go down repeatedly for about 15 minutes. Initially you may have difficulties with making transition between pitch levels. However, as you build your vocal strength with practicing the transition of pitch levels, it will become smoother.
b. Pitch Variation throughout a Phrase
You need to focus on the words, the sounds and the pitch of your voice and tone and pronouncing the words correctly. Pick a tongue twister and be familiar with the sentence or phrase. It will allow you to focus more in your pitch tone while you are reading and speak at the same time. As you reading the tongue twister tries to read it slowly and take time to think the transition and how you will to deliver the next words or phrase. As you are more comfortable with the transition of one pitch to another, then try to read it faster.
c. Working with Unfamiliar Copy
Pick up newspaper or book and read these materials aloud. As you reading your eyes must be several words ahead of what you are saying. If you are able to focus on where you are going than what you are, you will sounds more spontaneous and natural. Take time to practice this exercise 5 minutes everyday and you see the results less than a week. You will able to turn next page before you have done performing the current copy.
d. Word Control Exercise
Treat each word like an entire sentence. Choose a multisyllabic word like "hippopotamus". Vary pitch level in every syllable. Start with high level pitch, then low and back to high level pitch. You may also start with low level pitch and control so you can feel the rhythm and transition from one syllable to another syllable. As your transition goes smoother, works faster and faster. The goal is to understand the ability to manipulate the pitch and words in a way we see fit to sound believable and authentic.
2. Use proper breathing
Using proper breathing techniques as a voice actor is critical in helping you sound natural and conversational.
When you're reading a script, you should never sound like you're running out of air. When we start running out of air while we're talking, we just take a breath before the lack of air is even noticeable. When you're doing voice overs, breathing properly and breathing in the correct places within your script are essential skills to hone.
Whether you ascribe to method acting or not when it comes to voice over, asking yourself what was going on the moment before the script begins can be a valuable tool to helping you get into character.
3. Record Your Voice in Quite Room wherein there's no background noise.
4. Breaking down the script to figure out things, like: Who is your character? What is the point of the script? Who is the demographic you're trying to reach?
5. Avoiding a Sense of Rambling
6. Smiling While You Narrate
Voiceover professionals often recommend that you smile while you narrate. Smiling injects a touch of warmth and charisma in your voice.
