Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky has been available in Japan for seven years now, but it was only now that we Western gamers were finally able to get our hands on it. It represents a branch of the larger Legend of Heroes timber that can trace their origins back more than two decades (Japanese release only) Dragon Slayer games. Even Trails in the Sky is the first part of this trilogy to come to North America, its habit-forming gameplay and strong narrative game a bold claim about what will no doubt continue to be a very popular series.
The game stars teenage sisters Estelle and Joshua Bright two aspiring young Bracers (knights), who lives in a peaceful kingdom Liberl. As they graduate and become junior Bracers, their father, legendary Brace Cassius Bright, called away by the disturbing incidents and faster than they expected, they are asked to take on some very adult responsibilities.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is a traditional JRPG.
Trails in Sky's dual focus is storytelling and combat. The first is masterfully executed through humorous text dialogue sequences, and the second is handled through a turn-based combat system. When combat starts, characters have the option to Move, Attack, use Arts and Crafts (magical or special attacks) or trigger a powerful attack called an S-Craft. This broad range of options makes for some dynamic games, not to mention some hair raising, skin-of-your-teeth victories. The system is flexible enough that you can try a tactic, and if you lose miserably you can immediately try again with a different approach. There is a lot to get the hang of, but when it sinks in there is a lot of fun to be had mix of attacks, magic spells, and combat orders.
The battles are indeed the main point of the game, but there are plenty of other things to do, so you do not get burned out on brawling. You can browse Brace Guild bulletin boards and doing odd jobs to earn more money and experience but it is best to do this early because optional quests expire and become much less down the line. Side Missions are also local to each city, once you have left an area you can kiss goodbye his quests.
Although fighting and searching is both a hoot, at least half the reason to play this game is history. Gamers who hate talking head sequences will likely be put off by this aspect of things, but let's face it, this genre famous for its labyrinthine plot. Trails in Sky's history is complex but extremely well made and also the dialogue is hilarious. With a flamboyant bard frameworks at all in sight (regardless of sex) and children's mentor drinks like a fish, there's a good deal of borderline inappropriate laughing.
While Trails in the Sky's pacing is generally good, some players can find themselves becoming impatient when the game goes all High School Musical for over an hour, focusing on a school festival. Some players might also like the game obviously dated graphics and unspectacular sound, characterized by repeatedly catchy musical themes that will echo in your head long after you finish the game.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is the first in what promises to be a strong, entertaining trilogy. Although this first chapter is not the most original ever made, as any good JRPG it offers amusing to write, dynamic combat, interesting work, an absorbing story, and hours upon hours of gameplay.
