This article deals with kinesics.
I call it my five-dollar word. Do you know what it means? It may not be familiar to you, but you've probably come across its cousin, "kinetics." Kinetics is the science of motion, as in physics - what goes up must come down. Kinesics is the science of body motion and how it communicates. So, for example, if I respond to your question with a shrug of my shoulders, I've communicated to you without speaking, haven't I? If someone winks at you across a room, there's communication going on. A nod or a headshake is a form of kinesics. When you point to convey directions, or use your hands to show an object's dimensions, or hold up fingers to represent a number--those are all examples of kinesics. As a speaker, you want to use kinesics. Physical movement and gestures will help make you a more powerful speaker.
The key is purposeful. A repetitive gesture is not purposeful and will become a distracting mannerism. Purposeful gestures seem to naturally accompany what you're saying. Here's what I mean by thinking "purposeful." Picture someone speaking these phrases--what do you see in your mind's eye as a natural gesture that would go along with these statements?
* "It could fit in the palm of my hand."
* "This is important to me."
* "You are the key to our success."
* "There are three important points here." * "As you can see here on the visual..."
The more your gestures are descriptive and purposeful, the more natural and dynamic you will look. Purposeful gestures can also be implicit. Think about the bold, underline and italics features in your word processing program. Your gestures can do that as well. They can highlight what you're saying, add stress, or emphasize a point the same way your word processing features do.
Gestures give meaning and power to your presentation. I've often had workshop participants worry that they used their hands too much when they talked. But the truth is, I've never seen "too much." As long as they're purposeful, gestures will enhance your presentation, not detract from it.
