Pulse Oximeter Technology

Pulse oximeter technology has been around for quite a few years

. However, portable pulse oximeter technology is quite new. A portable oximeter is a small, hand-held medical device that measures pulse rate and blood-oxygen saturation (SpO2). How an oximeter actually measures pulse rate and SpO2 is quite complex, however the basic methodology is as follows: After oxygen is breathed into the lungs it passes into the blood where the oxygen attaches to hemoglobin as a means of transportation in the bloodstream. This oxygenated blood then circulates to various tissues throughout the body. Oxygenated blood absorbs light at different levels than deoxygenated blood. Pulse Oximeters utilize the light absorptive characteristics of hemoglobin and the varying pulsating nature of blood flow to measure oxygenation saturation levels. Pulse Oximeter consists of two light emitting diodes and two light collecting sensors, which measure the amount of red and infra-red light emerging from tissues traversed by the light rays. Oxygen-rich hemoglobin absorbs more of the infrared light and the hemoglobin without oxygen absorbs more of the red light. The Pulse Oximeter then calculates these variations and supplies a digital read out of the SPO2 levels as well as pulse rate. This digital read out is then supplied to a physician to assess the amount of oxygen being carried in the blood and to determine whether supplemental oxygen is needed.

The Landon Medical LM-900 Oximeter is a great example of an oximeter that is leading the way in oximetry technology. Finger Pulse Oximeter provides on spot SpO2 (percentage of oxygen saturation in the blood) and pulse rate with accuracy and ease. A true comprehensive product, the LM-900 combines light weight and portability with multiple features including on-spot measurement of blood oxygen saturation, pulse rate, Perfusion Index, and Plethysmograph capabilities.

The LM-900 Oximeter is widely used in all health-care facilities, including hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient surgery centers, physician offices, dental clinics, sport athletes, aviation pilots, emergency and ambulatory situations, as well as for home diagnostics to monitor such illnesses as cardiac issues, respiratory problems, asthma, and many more... In addition to the LM-800 model, the LM-900 model features the latest Organic Light Emitting Device (OLED) color display andPlethysmograph capabilities.
