Pulse Start Ballast

Most mid wattage and high wattage light fixtures operate with the use of a device known as electronic ballast

. This device is responsible for limiting and controlling the current within the fixture, most importantly during the start up of the light fixture. There are two main types of transformers on the market today - traditional metal halide ballasts and the newer pulse start ballast are quickly becoming the standard choice due its energy efficient advantages over the older style. Understanding how the two systems work will help highlight the benefits of the newer types and help you decide which one is the right choice for your lighting needs.

Metal halide ballasts have been used for a long time, and are the style most familiar to people. Metal halide lamps use the probe start design, during which an electrical charge is fired between two electrodes and sends a series of electrons to a separate electrode. A bi metal switch then removes the original starting electrode from the system and leaves the light functioning. Every time that the light is switched on, a small amount of the chemical tungsten flies off of the electrodes. Over time this tungsten will build up on the walls of the tube, blackening it and greatly reducing the effectiveness of the ballast and light.

A pulse start ballast does not have the starting electrode found in metal halide lamps. It uses a high voltage igniter instead. The igniter works with the transformer itself to send out several high voltage pulses throughout the lamp, starting the light with them. Thanks to the lack of a starting electrode, heat loss is greatly reduced due to the smaller amount of seal space at the end of the lamp. The amount of tungsten emitted through this process is next to nothing thanks to the high voltage of the pulses, keeping the lamp running at its best for a much longer period of time than standard probe-start transformers.

The warm up times of a light when using a pulse start electronic ballast are much faster as well, and the lights can be started in extremely cold temperatures where probe lamps simply will not start. Plus, since PS transformers operate at much higher frequencies than the traditional lamps the dreaded and sometimes infuriating fluorescent flicker that accompanies so many lights is now a thing of the past. This ensures that your lights provide comfortable lighting solutions at the best possible efficiency. Choosing a PS electrical transformer will save you money both due to their higher efficiency and the longer lasting nature of their design.
