Purchasing A New Plate Roll
Purchasing new plate rolls is a necessary step for many companies
. When it comes time, take into consideration what will work best.
The two major things to consider before purchasing your plate roll are the materials that you most commonly roll and the various restrictions of the certain machines.
When you take these two features into consideration you will find a plate roll that will meet your needs, giving you a competitive edge within the industry. Once you purchase new plate rolls you need to keep them maintained so that they will have a long life span and fulfill their potential.
First, only use plate rolls with materials that they are made to handle. Metal temper and yield strength varies greatly and must be matched with the appropriate machine.
Metal temper is the hardness or strength properties of the metal used in the plate rollers. Yield strength of a material is defined as the stress at which a material begins to deform plastically.
As time goes on steel and metals continue to change drastically. Now more than ever, it is important to be aware of the materials temper and yield strength. Steels and metals are continually getting stronger.
Because these metals take more strength to bend or break, you will need to look into various plate rolls that provide varying pressure strength. Problems commonly occur when extra stress pressure is placed on the upper limits of their plate roll.
If 5/8 inch plate is rolled through a one inch-rated machine you are likely to have problems. This will create a small degree of barrel effect will likely occur which will cause extra tension on both the machine and the material.
Plate thickness is also important because it approaches the upper end of a machine's rating. If you don't match these then severe defects can occur.
If these defects occur the materials will need to be corrected with a shim, but likely they will not be sellable. When very thin material is rolled through a very thick plate, the finished product may come out tighter in the center than at the ends.
Shimming, to correct this problem, is very time consuming. But it will fix this problem called an hourglass effect. It is easier to have the right machine for the product in the first place rather than having to shim to repair for earlier mistakes.
It is recommended that manufactures identify what material and what amount of thickness represent their highest volume of work. When a company knows this, they can deliver a machine that will work the best with the materials they use. They will conserve valuable production hours and eliminate large amounts of scrap.
When purchasing plate rolls it is important to know materials that will go with your plate roller and the materials you use the most.
