Purposeful Lighting For A Rustic Look

It used to be that lighting was simply to give light to a room

. A lamp or two would be placed in a corner and the purpose was supposedly fulfilled. But, lighting has made vast improvements and has been updated to add value, beauty, and depth to a room and overall look of a home as well. The many purposes of lighting have added a whole new level of life to a home, inside and out. Outdoor lighting adds an appeal to your home that can sometimes even be a deal-breaker when it comes to selling.

There are four main functions or purposes of lighting that go beyond flipping a switch for a little light:

One main function of lighting in your home is overall feel. Lighting brightens up any room and takes the look to a whole new level. You can brighten up a room by adding wall sconces, overhead lighting fixtures, hanging chandelier based on the theme of the room, or lamps that make a statement in the room. The fixtures and finishes from chrome and iron to bronze, will make a dramatic effect on the overall environment of a room.

A second purpose of lighting is to add depth to a room. It is easy to miss this step when decorating any particular room. We tend to focus too much on an individual piece of furniture instead of what makes sense as a whole. A beautiful way to add depth to a room is rustic pendant lighting. Pendant lights hang to a customizable level and adds new dimension to a room through staggering or leveling the pendant lights. They can be as bold or soft as needs be. The third function of lighting is to create a mood. Our homes are our getaways and are a place of refuge from the rest of the world. The mood that is created there will set a standard for those living in it. The environment we surround ourselves in plays a role in our moods. A great way to create a mood in any room is adding a dimmer switch to the fixtures and lighting pieces we put in. Not only does the lighting piece itself set a mood, but also the way it sets off light in the room. Some rustic styles offer amber or etched glass that automatically dims a light or lets it glow in a particular way.

No matter what you choose to do with your home, creating an ambience with purpose and function can be established with a great choice of lighting.
