A study carried out by the Department for Environment

, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the Energy Saving Trust has shown that electrical products plugged in but not in use or left on standby cost the UK up to 1.3 billion pounds in electricity bills each year.

Too many of us are leaving computers, televisions and other electrical appliances switched on when going up to bed last thing at night or leaving our home unoccupied, which results in a large amount of electricity being wasted, an average of 86 pounds per household.

This news comes at a time when electricity bills are at a record high and set to rise even further over the coming months and years. It is the responsibility of the homeowner to ensure that they do their best to waste less energy in the future which not only means avoiding leaving appliances switched on, but changing their energy habits full-stop.

There are a number of proven ways of cutting the amount of electricity you consume such as those listed below:

New windows

Full loads

When filling up your washing machine or dishwasher always make sure that you put a full load in, avoiding washing clothes or crockery in small quantities as again this will consume an unnecessary amount of electricity and water.

If you have been with your current electricity provider for quite some time then it may be a good idea to look into switching to an alternative company as very often they will be able to provide you with a cheaper tariff.
