Putting Education First For Single Moms

Education is always an important key to a good future

. Since running for office in 2008, President Barack Obama has made education a priority issue for his administration. Scholarships and grants are only a small part of the education system makeover.

One familiar part of the economic meltdown is the rise in college tuition and other costs. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. Many young adults choose to forgo college because of the cost. Single moms are especially affected in a bad way. Not only does educating mothers help provide for their families, but it also improves the workforce. The President believes in this and has begun a mission to create scholarships for moms. There is no difference between Federal Pell Grants and Obama grants. The name "Obama grants" came as a result of the President's emphasis on educating moms. With these grants, college-bound students can receive over $5,000 to pay for school. The primary goal is to encourage single moms to return to school, and by 2012 they could receive as much as $5,400. Working mothers can pay for tuition and books or even daycare if that allows them to attend school.

Another worthwhile program is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. With this tax credit, the first $4,000 of college expenses are free. At less expensive schools in particular this is a big credit. A grant for a working mother as well as a tax credit can help fund much-appreciated educational advancement. There are almost no restrictions on where and what a student studies. Now the expenses are just a little lighter, and eager mothers can enroll in school.

With his actions President Obama has confirmed his belief in this issue. Through the recent stimulus package, many undergraduate and graduate loans will be less of a burden. There is more government emphasis on properly preparing students for their future at all levels of education. Higher education at a 2-year college can be a great option, and there is emphasis being put on that fact. To attend a 2-year college has a number of benefits, including saving money and learning a trade or skill.

In 2007 Obama stated, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." The President's actions are reflecting his words. Scholarships for moms are only a small part of the mission to help educate more people. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
