Putting Education First For Single Moms

It's widely accepted that education is important to having a successful future

. Since running for office in 2008, President Barack Obama has made education a priority issue for his administration. Many important people are focused on increasing scholarship opportunities and improving education.

College expenses continue to increase even as the economy slumps. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. Many potential students suffer and are unable to afford to go to college. Working, single mothers are particularly hit hard. More education helps single mothers achieve on their jobs and take care of their families. It's important to the President and that's why he's implemented a program for scholarships for mothers. Federal Pell Grants have now been fondly called Obama grants. With these grants, college-bound students can receive over $5,000 to pay for school. Before Pell grants maxed out at about $4,000. Tuition, books, travel and school supplies are all expenses that students can cover with grant money.

Another worthwhile program is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This program allows the first $4,000 of education expenses to be free. This $4,000 write off can be a big help to many students. A grant for a working mother as well as a tax credit can help fund much-appreciated educational advancement. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. Now the expenses are just a little lighter, and eager mothers can enroll in school.

Making more efforts to improve education opportunities is the best way for President Obama to show that he values them. The new stimulus package has some benefits for potential college students. Preparing schools and students for success is an important Obama administration mission. Another goal is to encourage more students to attend community colleges. To attend a 2-year college has a number of benefits, including saving money and learning a trade or skill.

In 2007 Obama stated, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." The President's actions are reflecting his words. Scholarships for moms are only a small part of the mission to help educate more people. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
