Putting Education First For Working Moms
Taking advantage of educational opportunities is a smart way to be successful
. President Obama is a good example, and he has shown his commitment to helping others. Grants and scholarships are just the beginning of efforts to try to make over higher education.
Although the economy has dramatically fallen, college prices have continued to rise for many years. Besides tuition and housing, fees for books, travel and eating are often not covered. Low-income students suffer the most if they are unable to secure enough scholarship or grant money. Single, working moms are a big section of this group. More education helps single mothers achieve on their jobs and take care of their families. It's important to the President and that's why he's implemented a program for scholarships for mothers. Because of his efforts many people now refer to Federal Pell Grants as Obama grants. Currently students can earn about $5,350 through a Pell grant. This is an increase of $1,000 over the previous maximum, and the goal is to help working mothers return to school. With these grants for moms, they can pay for tuition, books or any other school-related expenses.
Another incentive to consider is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This tax credit makes a way for students to write off the first $4,000 of their education costs. This $4,000 write off can be a big help to many students. Single moms often fall into this group, so these programs are particularly beneficial to them. There are almost no restrictions on where and what a student studies. With a few less money worries, more single mothers can attend college.
With his actions President Obama has confirmed his belief in this issue. With the recent passage of the economic stimulus plan, a lot of college loans will be offered by the government. The administration is also focusing on improving the performance of schools at all levels. There is also emphasis on encouraging more students to consider community college. To attend a 2-year college has a number of benefits, including saving money and learning a trade or skill.
"We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." Those are the words of President Obama in his 2007 speech Reclaiming the American Dream. President Obama has shown he is serious about action. If the goal is to educate as many as possible, making grants available for mothers is a good step. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
