Putting Your Headlights On
One of the things that people often forget about is the fact that whenever their
windshield wipers are on, they are technically supposed to have their headlights on. There are all sorts of instances in which drivers are supposed to make sure that their headlights are turned on. However, the fail to do so either because they are not paying attention or because they simply do not know any better. Both of these explanations are truly unacceptable as forgetting to put your headlights on can result in others becoming involved in a serious accident.
Last week, there were extremely heavy fog conditions in the area that I live in. I had to run an errand in the morning, and while I was driving, the fog was so thick that I actually couldn't even make out the lines that were on the roadway. I slowed down and could just barely make out the other drivers who were on the road, and this was mostly due to the fact that they had their lights on. I soon realized that I was near the exit that I needed to get off at. I glanced in my rear view mirrors and side mirrors and looked over my shoulder behind me. I could make out the lights of a couple of drivers who were well off behind me, so I put my turn signal on and proceeded to start to change lanes. As I began to change lanes, at the last minute, I just happened to make out what looked like the front bumper of another vehicle. I quickly swerved back into my lane, and sure enough- there was another driver practically right beside me!
How could I have missed this other driver when I had so thoroughly checked around me before I changed lanes? As it turned out, the other driver didn't have their headlights on. I looked around me again, and again, I could see the other drivers behind me and in front of me with their headlights on. And as the driver (whom I nearly missed hitting) proceeded to pass me on my right, they literally disappeared into the fog. Angry, I again changed lanes and exited the highway. I just couldn't fathom how inattentive someone could be when they were driving in their car and could see that driving conditions were foggy.
When you are driving and the weather conditions are foggy or when it is raining heavily outside, etc., you should always have your headlights on. Even if you think that you can see around you, remember that the real reason that you have headlights in your vehicle is so that other people around you know where you are and can see you. If you cannot see other drivers, it suddenly makes driving conditions considerably more dangerous. Therefore, always make sure that your lights are turned on when you get into your car. It may prevent you or others from getting into an accident. Remember, headlights are in your car for a reason!
