Quick Checklist Of Common Pool Equipment And Heater Problems Before You Call The Technician

If you've ever called over a technician as soon as something's gone wrong

, only to have it fixed with the flick of a switch of by plugging something in, you'll want to read this checklist. Whether it's figuring out the pool pump or what's supposed to happen with the pool filter, it's really a matter of having the information you need to know the problem.

Extremely Important: If you find a malfunction, do not attempt to fix faulty electrical or gas fittings yourself. This can be very dangerous, and by law these repairs must be done by a licensed tradesperson.

Find and identify the problems as far as you can:

Be extremely cautious with any equipment which appears to be malfunctioning. Shut down any malfunctioning systems at the power source.


If the area is wet, do not make physical contact with the electrical power systems in that area. Shut the power off at the mains.

Call a service person ASAP.

Problems and fixes

1. Water not warm enough:

Check the timer. Adjust to see if additional time is required.

Check the filter. A dirty filter will need cleaning.

Check the thermostat. This may be faulty, which explains the lower temperatures.

Is the power shutting off while running? You'll need your power supply checked.

2. Water too warm:

Check the water heater. If it's running and not supposed to be running, turn it off. Look for any obvious signs of malfunctions

Check the timer. If this has been set incorrectly, you've probably found the problem.

Water seems "wrong":

The water may seem "yucky", and just doesn't feel right. This can be a complex problem, and may relate to either chemical or filter problems that situation could also be caused by algae, or chemical imbalances.

Test the water, and see if you can identify the issues.

Check the filter for any obvious problems. If clogged, back wash, and do a water treatment.
