Rahul Gandhi advocates for giving a chance to youth in politics
Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has got a firm belief in youth and his advocacy
for the youth to be given a chance in politics will certainly be seen implemented in the coming state election. To begin with, several of these IYC elected members was given party nomination, even if they are not in a position to win, so that they gain experience in electoral politics in the long run.
In the last Lok Sabha election, Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi had actively lobbied for party nomination for the youth so that they get valuable experience. Several of them won bringing in a new dynamism in the party affairs.
Repeating his style of work, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi dispatched a letter to the city unit Congress telling them to distribute tickets to the youth. Congress icon Rahul Gandhi and the city unit Congress leadership went out of its way to distribute tickets to the youth. For the first time, about six candidates who are not even 30 have been given mandate to fight the civic elections. Former NSUI leaders, who till now were regular participants in the agitations in the university, can hope to become corporators. The Congress has tried to bring in the change which may alter political equations in the city politics.
A look at Congress and BJP lists makes it clear that the former is ahead of its rival in giving tickets to youth and freshers. Congress has given tickets to 63 youngsters below 40 years of age. As many as 19 candidates are below 50 years and only 32 seniors above 50 years of age have been favoured with party tickets. Of the 114 candidates selected, about 75 have never fought civic body elections.
Saffron party has repeated only 46 of its sitting candidates. Rests are mostly fresh, but in the age group of 35 and 50. Probably the youngest being 28-year-old woman Swati Sosa, who is an MA and BEd.
A congress leader said, "We had received a letter from Rahul Gandhi asking that maximum tickets be given to youth for the civic body elections. We thought about 10 candidates from Youth Congress will be accommodated, but have a cluster of 63 below 40 as candidates which augers well for the party."
According to a former city unit Congress president, "If we are able to put up a decent show with these candidates, it will set a new trend in the city politics."
A senior BJP leader said, "We don't see age as a factor. For us, a person's dedication, his ability to work and capacity to win are important."
Certainly, youth is the future of any nation and India is proud of its having a larger percentage of youth in population. They are innovative and ready to bring transformation in the system to make it better for all. Rahul Gandhi has definitely shown his vision by becoming an instrumental in bringing new and fresh blood into politics. Indeed, he has set a new trend, albeit slowly, in Indian politics.
