Rahul Gandhi urges youth to strengthen the party to regain power in TN
CHENNAI. December 23, 2010. During his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, an impromptu visit by the Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday to the Dalits in Thumbaipatti village left the locals hugely mesmerized seeing his generosity for the down- troddens like them. Then, his address to the youth at Vanagaram made the participants highly enthused with assurance of the state's future chief minister would be from them (the youth) only.
Urging the members of the Youth Congress (YC) in the state to build the organization systematically, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi asked the newly elected office-bearers of YC, to make a beginning from the grassroot levels, for preparing a larger canvas for the party in the state.
Admitting that being out of power for over a long time, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi expressed that it would not be an easy task for building the party strong in the state. "The battle to build the future of Congress in the state is yours ," remarked Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, adding that nothing was more powerful than getting close to and working with the mass.
The need is to strengthen the party at grassroot levels like the panchayats and the wards, he told the gathering. While interacting with the YC functionaries, he urged them to get prepared for the next panchayat elections in the state. The goal should be to win majority seats for making the Congress party strong enough to regain power in the state, he exhorted the YC members for the battle of ballots in the coming panchayat polls.
Earlier, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi visited the Dalit colony in Thumbaipatti village, the birthplace of Congress leader Kakkan, unannounced. He went to the house where Kakkan was born and interacted with Kakkan's wife Azhagu and other relatives there in their one-room dwelling.
After spending some time with them, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi walked into the streets in that Dalit colony, having deplorable civic amenities. He shook hands with the locals, many of them being children. Colony dwellers remained enthralled over the impromptu visit of the Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
Strongly advocating for the resurgence of the Dalits for equal share and equal opportunity of participation in governance, Congress General secretary Rahul Gandhi stressed for bringing the under-privileged ones into the mainstream of the social fabric, for a comprehensive development of all in the society.
Later, at an interactive session with the intelligentsia class, representing wide spectrum of the society, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi conveyed his disapproval of the treatment of Sri Lankan Tamils in their country and said that he would raise the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
To a query related to changes needed in the existing political scenario, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that many sincere people still keep the politics at bay. Congress party's doors have been kept open to dedicated people and for this, he said that a beginning had been made by revamping the YC by holding elections for entry of honest and sincere people in the organization.
