Reaching New Heights in Fitness
This article concerns a way for you- the student of fitness- to get to a higher level
. Often, we can get stuck in a rut- of doing the same exercises, or routines, and we seem to stay at a particular level of fitness. Of course, compared to doing nothing, the aforementioned state of sameness is not so bad- it's way better than being out of shape. Here's one way to break through-set your self a really tough goal. For purposes of this article, I will assume that you are in good shape already and that fitness is a substantial part of your life.
Here are a few major goals that you might seek to accomplish:
1) if you are not already doing them, add pushups to your exercise repertoire. Pushups may well be the best all around exercise for total strength. It is very good for your core, and it exercises nearly every muscle in the body. Most people cannot do 10 good pushups. But let's say that you can crank out 25- 40 good ones- back straight, head up, rear end down. Now, here's a great goal- work your way up to doing 100 pushups at a time- that is, 100 repititions. That is no easy feat, but it is a goal that is doable for anyone who has good core strength and good arm strength.
2) Set a goal of 150 good situps. Situps are also an excellent exercise- good for the abs, and also for the interior organs. Don't use your back muscles, but rather, "pull yourself up"- as if a string or rope were attached to your head and chest- and you were being pulled up. That will cause your ab musles to do the work- not your back. Also, don't do the situps very fast- accent good form. Form is important, because if you go very fast, chances are, you are using your back muscles too much- and that is not good. Make sure your knees are bent- soles of the feet flat on the ground- hands lightly touching the head.
3) Aim for 1000 jumping jacks. Yes, it can get boring, but, if you are in good shape already, you should be able to do, let's say, about 300-400 jumping jacks right now. Try to build up to 1000- that is not easy at all. As a matter of fact, when I taught karate- way back at the State University at Stonybrook, we did 1000 jacks- however, only myself and one other student could do it- everybody else stopped somehwere along the way!
In aiming for any or all of these goals, you may find that your fitness level goes way up- and that you are much stronger in many ways. Don't race to get there- build up slowly- allow the process to take its time- that is important. If you are starting at a "low" level, it could take 6 months or more to reach any or all of the above goals. It's getting there- the path itself- that matters most. Don't kill yourself doing it. The point is to set some new goals, and to see how difficult it is for you- or easy- to get there. These goals are good for all martial artists, and for anyone interested in total fitness- along with other exercises that you are doing.
