Or is it possible that time will just continue beyond this date? Or does this imply extinction of civilization?

The argument presented by several Mayan civilization experts claim that they have evidence that the Mayan calendar extends way beyond the date in question, based on the characters 13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.0.0.0.0 found on one ancient Mayan inscription. In Mayan mythology, this particular time period indicated the previous world's age upon full circle.

The cataclysmic theory was fueled by some authors and researchers of Mayan civilization.
