Ready to Start Networking? Here's the Best Way for You to Begin Building a Network
It's an ongoing process of building long-term mutually beneficial relationships. If you're one of the millions of business people who need to network, but don't know where to even start, here's where you begin: the way that will work best for you. And this depends on your personality and your personal style and preferences.
Are you outgoing? Love to talk to people and interested in what's going on around you? The best way for you to start is to just start going places. Don't be too critical or scientific, just check the business section of the paper or call your local chamber of commerce. Go to the next business networking event that looks interesting. You'll start getting to know people and the community. Plus they'll direct you to opportunities that are more targeted and helpful toward building your network.
Do you like to help other people? But not interested in loud, large groups of them at once? The best way for you to start networking is to find a way to give value to other people, one at a time. Look at your existing network (everyone has at least a handful of contacts) and ask them how you can help them. It's best to start by letting them know what you are willing and able to do. And then find out what kind of resources they need. What kind of information are they interested in?
Are you direct and to the point? Skip the events and start working on building a connection to those you most want to meet. You may even try just calling them up and making an appointment. Not to sell them, but to get to know more about them. Or to contact your exiting people and working it to try to find a path to the people you want to know.
Are you analytical and interested in the details? Build up your ability to stay connected by gathering and keeping track of information on the people you meet and those you are getting to know. Harvey Mackay keeps track of 66 different pieces of information on his clients and connections. You'll start growing your connections by learning more about who knows who in your network.
The first steps can be the hardest. Use the easiest and simplest place for you personally. Don't follow the path of someone else who has a different style. Their approach may have worked for them, but not necessarily be the most encouraging for you. But once you get going, momentum will help you. Your network will grow and you'll find it easier to take part in all the parts of networking that you need to build a rounded strategy.
