Real-world Self-defense Training - The "must-have" Situations That Your Training System Must Handle!

Are you serious about learning real-world self-defense

? If you are, then there are certain things - certain situations that you must be training to be able to handle. Neglecting any one of these attack situations in your self-defense training could leave you in the worst place than you've ever been in your life!

If you are not one of the millions of people in the world who are training in the martial arts because it's cool, fun, or for a trophy - if you're serious about getting solid, reliable, and effective real-world self-defense training, then read on. Because... this article is for you!

The truth is that you do not know, right now, if or when you will ever be attacked. You also don't know other things, such as...

1) Who your attacker will be.

2) Why they will be attacking (what their motives will be).

3) You won't know how far your attacker is willing to go (is he just venting frustration, or will he want you dead?).

4) You don't know how much experience, training, or ability he or she will have.

5) What type of attack he will throw at you, and...

6) A whole lot more variables than I could list in this single article!

But, while anything is "possible," there are certain probabilities and statically proven "facts" that we can work with when we are training to be able to survive and escape from a real-world self-defense situation. We can also make certain assumptions, like the attacker will probably be bigger, stronger, and have the advantage - as long as those assumptions err on the conservative side.

So, all things considered, and assuming that we are the underdog...

One of the categories that we can focus on in our training is "attack-type." We can categorize like attacks and then train to be able to deal with each group of attacks.

And, while wrestlers tend to stick to wrestling, and boxers tend to stick to boxing, those of us who are serious about real world self-defense, do not have that luxury. We must be prepared to wrestle if an attacker grabs us, and we must be prepared to avoid punches and kicks if that's what he's throwing at us.

That being said, here is a small list of the absolute essentials - the "must-have" attack situations in your training or self-defense system:

1) The ability to avoid incoming punches (straight, hooking, and upper-cutting) to both high and low targets on your body.

2) With the overwhelming popularity of Tae Kwon Do and other kick-oriented arts, we must be able to defend against the attacker who took the "yellow-belt" course so he could learn a cook kick to knock you around with. So, you should be able to at-least avoid and counter straight (plunging or "stamping" style), hooking (or "roundhouse"), lateral (sideways), and lifting style kicks.

3) Single and double hand grabs to wrists, clothing (sleeves, lapels, and collars (from the rear)), as well as chokes and body grabs like the "bear-hug."

4) Pinning and restraining techniques (standing and prone), whether in the middle of a room or area, or from positions where you are pinned against a wall, facing toward or away from your attacker, or while against something like a car or other oddly-shaped object.

5) The ability to avoid incoming weapon strikes and cuts from knives, clubs, broken bottles, etc.

6) And, regardless of whether you like them or not, or whether they are legal where you live, the fact is that - guns are a part of our world. And, regardless of gun control laws, criminals will always be able to get them. So, you must be able to avoid gunfire, as well as to be able to control or disarm an attacker who is right in front of you and about to pull the trigger!

While this is by no means an exhaustive list, the idea is that you must be able to defend yourself against those attacks that are most commonly used by the typical attacker - rather than limit yourself to the "official" attack-types and defenses of the martial art you chose to take up.
