Reason Why Sex Education In Schools Is Important

Subjecting students to the concept of sex is one of the most important steps that

schools must take to ensure the children are safe from the dire consequences of indulging in sex without proper awareness. It is important for teens or adolescents to know about sex as being aware keeps them informed about sexually transmitted diseases, child sexual abuse, unwanted pregnancy etc.

The right time to teach sex education

The right time to give sex advice to teens or adolescents is when they are 12 years old or above and preferably below 18. One of the most obvious avenues where sex advice is usually expected to be given from is immediate kin such as parents, peer etc. Parents are known to be a better source of sex advice for they know better than ones peers because the latter are likely to be of the same age as that of the child seeking sex advice, which can heighten the chances of assimilating the wrong information.

The concept of giving sex education in classroom has been introduced lately to ensure that no child fails to be given the right information about what sex is and how it should be practised under certain circumstances involving utmost care. According to the WHO, about 34% of the total HIV patients are those who come under the category of children ages 12-19.

Why sex education in schools is good

1. Sex education in schools helps children know and understand the possible consequences of indulging in sex without being aware of its pros and cons. It dispels all the myths that children may have about it and makes the children expand their understanding of the subject.

2. sex education in schools helps children openly discuss about their concerns related to sex without any scope for embarrassment. Sex education includes giving the children the space to put their doubts up and get them answered.

3. As adolescents grow up, they get curious about the make-up of the opposite gender. Sex education, in such a case, can help the children know the difference and keep their desires of exploring on check.

4. Giving children sex advice is better than having them read or watch it. Magazines and internet are loaded with a mountain of information that may mislead the children.

5. Child abuse is prevalent all across the world. Sex education can help children know what kind of touch is right and what kind is not.
