Reasons Why A City May Need A New Bridge Built
No matter how sturdy a bridge may be, there is no getting around the fact that time can cause its structural integrity to be compromised
. As a result, the potential for accidents and incidents with worn bridge structures can increase exponentially as their integrity continues to degrade. For this reason alone, it is often necessary to build a new bridge in lieu of one that needs to be either shut down or demolished because of the potential for danger. While building new isn't always necessary, in some cases there is simply no other choice.
The following are a few scenarios where building a new bridge structure is necessary for a state or local municipality near a busy city or metropolitan area.
Old Bridge is Over Capacity
One of the most common reasons for building a new bridge is a result of overpopulation and overuse. As cities become more and more populated, more and more people begin to make use of bridges that were not initially intended to hold them. This can result in overcrowding and large amounts of bumper to bumper traffic. It can also cause immense strain on the structure, eventually causing it to fail. If bridges were not built to handle their current capacities, new ones must be built if governments wish to avoid certain catastrophe.
Old Bridge is Structurally Damaged
The most time-sensitive reason for constructing new bridges is because an old structure is either damaged or structurally impaired. If this is the case, it is not safe for people to utilize it, as overusing an already damaged structure can lead to disaster. As bridges get older, their structural integrity begins to decrease. Any bridges that are past their prime should be shut down to limited in use while a new one is being constructed.
Changing Traffic/Construction Problems
As cities continue to grow, it is not uncommon to construct a new bridge to meet the demands of new traffic patterns. For instance, if a new business park is constructed that will be utilized by thousands of people on a daily basis, it is up to the city to provide an easy transportation route to the new facility. In many cases, this type of situation warrants the building of new bridges. Building new bridges can be a reasonable way to increase tourism and route more people in and out of a city, and growing with a city's demands can make it somewhat of a necessity.
