Reasons You May Consider Trying The New 24/4 Drospirenone Pill

Contraceptive pills have been around for decades

, and recent years have seen new formulations that allow more women than ever before to take advantage of the convenience and effectiveness of taking "the pill" for birth control. One of the newer formulations is known as the 24/4 pill, and it contains a hormone called Drospirenone, or DRSP. This is an exciting development, because this formulation tends to improve skin quality and relieve some problems with premenstrual fluid retention.

The reason it is called the 24/4 pill is that the user takes 24 days of pills containing hormones, followed by 4 days of hormone-free pills. DRSP is a fourth-generation progestin that is a slightly different formulation from progestins contained in most other oral contraceptive pills on the market. Not only does DRSP contribute to the effectiveness of the 24/4 pill, but it often has the additional medical benefit of relieving premenstrual dysphoria and improving skin quality by clearing up acne. These special properties are unique to DRSP, and are not found in other progestins.

Another advantage of the 24/4 pill, aside from the benefits of DRSP, is that the dosing regimen makes for a shorter hormone-free period, so that the benefits of DRSP nearly constantly. When taken as directed, the 24/4 pill is 99.97% effective in preventing pregnancy, which is one of the highest levels of effectiveness of any form of birth control.

The way DRSP works to improve skin tone is by reducing the effects of the male hormones, or androgens that circulate in the body. This often has the effect of clearing up mild to moderate acne. DRSP also has the effect of counteracting estrogen's tendency to induce water retention and water weight gain.

Because there are only 4 hormone-free days per cycle, the 24/4 pill tends to reduce pre-menstrual symptoms like cramps and breast tenderness which occur in women not taking the pill and in women taking some of the 21/7 pills, where there are 7 hormone-free pill days.

The 24/4 pill is so far the first and only pill that is indicated for birth control and for treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD. PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome, or PMS. The 24/4 pill also regulates cycles and usually results in lighter periods.

Of course, every drug has side effects, and the 24/4 pill is no exception. Some women may experience minor bleeding between periods, breast tenderness, and headaches within the first month of use. Usually these side effects go away on their own, but if they persist longer than three cycles or if they are severe, patients should contact their doctor for advice.

Women differ in their response to the different oral contraceptives available today. An oral contraceptive formulation that causes no unpleasant side effects in one woman may cause side effects in others that cause them to have to stop taking them. With the advent of DRSP in the 24/4 pill, women now have another option when it comes to oral contraception, and the benefits of this formulation appear to go beyond the prevention of pregnancy.
