Reasons to Consider a PTAC Through the Wall Air Conditioners
Here are a few great reasons to consider a PTAC "through the wall" air conditioner to beat the heat this summer. Firstly, what is a PTAC? A PTAC unit is a Package Terminal Air Conditioner. You've probably used one the last time you were in a hotel. They sit on the floor and actually go through the wall. So half of the unit faces in the room, and the other half is outside.
The first advantage of using a PTAC to heat or cool a room is since it is through the wall, there isn't any need for ductwork. Central heat and air setups require extensive ductwork running through the walls to each room. The PTAC doesn't need any ductwork. It just heats and cools the room its currently in.
Another advantage is that since it heats and cools only the room it is in, it is more efficient than a system that cools rooms that no one is occupying. So if you are sitting in the living room reading a book enjoying the cool a/c and no one else is in the house, other rooms are being needlessly cooled.
The PTAC unit is relatively easy to install. Again, no ductwork makes things a bit more simplified. The most difficult part is cutting a hole in the wall.
One final advantage of a PTAC air conditioner is that one can replace the cover on the unit. If the unit has been in use for some time and looks old, or the carpet or wall colors have change, one can easily replace the old cover with a new one and instantly upgrade the look of the unit. The covers come in a variety of colors, just make sure it matches your particular PTAC unit. Check with the manufacturer when in doubt.
