On Tuesday December 15, millions of parents woke up to one of the largest blind recalls. The government announced that 50 million Roman-style shades and roll-up blinds were a hazard to children. These blinds had the capability of strangling young children. Consumer Product Safety Commission Report
The Consumer Product Safety Commission teamed up with major manufacturers to announce this tragic recall. Reports said that five children had died due to Romans shades since 2006 and three deaths were reported to come from roll-up blinds since 2001. In addition, 16 near-strangulations have occurred with the Roman shades since 2006. According to the commission, a child's neck can get stuck between the fabric on the backside of the blind and the exposed cord. When this happens, the cord may wrap around the child's neck causing the potential for strangulation. Strangulation can also occur from roll-up blinds as well. The danger comes from the lifting loop. If this loop is able to slide off the side of the window blind, then there is the possibility that the child's neck can get tangled. The other risk comes when a child's neck gets between the loop and the blind material. Safety Recommendations
The recommendation remains the same to all parents. Check your blinds and shades carefully. The cords should not be accessible by children. If your cords are accessible, then you need to take part in the recall or get a free RetroFit Kit available from the Window Covering Safety Council at
http://www.windowcoverings.org or call them at 1-800-506-4636. The best option is not to place window treatments with cords in or around children's area. Cordless window covering are highly recommended for every home with children or where children visit. Cordless Window Blinds
The cordless lift is available as an upgrade on many styles of blinds. The cordless style can either be opened from the bottom only, or it can be opened from both bottom and top. Some of the more popular styles available for the cordless lift are:
