That's because a lot of businesses do end up failing when a recession comes knocking on the door. Recessions make people realize what they actually need to be spending their money on and what they were frivolously spending money on. So you might wonder, if you want to start a business, what types of businesses are going to stay going no matter what the economy is like?

The first thing to consider in this type of situation is what types of businesses you definitely don't want to get into. The biggest business that struggles in America during a recession is the auto industry. People definitely don't need to buy a brand new car when they don't have the money to do so. So when recessions hit, the auto industry gets it really hard. This being said, make sure you don't get into the auto industry any time soon. Although they are definitely recovering now and doing better than they were doing, they are still struggling a lot and not being able to sell as many cars as they would hope.

Strangely, in a recession, the restaurants and movie theaters tend to do just fine. Most of the guesses on why this is is because people want to get away for just a little bit. When you go out to dinner and a movie, it's not like you are spending a fortune on something like you would on a car or boat, but you are able to get away from the problems that are going on and make yourself feel good. So restaurants and movie theaters do just fine in recessions.

Less frivolous industries that people go into and don't struggle with in bad economies are things like funeral homes and health care companies. These types of businesses are a given because they are from things that you really can't get around.

People are always dying and that means that funeral homes are always getting good business. Although that's a pretty morbid thing to think about, it's definitely true. Also, people are always going to get sick, no matter if they are poor or not. That means that health care people are going to do just fine in these types of situations. No matter what the economy is like, you are always going to need a good doctor.
