Recommended Hiking Gear For Beginners

Getting started hiking can be a fairly cheap recreational sport to get started in

, or you can make it as expensive as you would like. To get started hiking some specific gear to keep comfortable and safe will be needed to purchase and is listed below.

Hiking boots are a must for long hikes through rough terrain for both safety and comfort reason. Mid to heavy weight boots provide both arch and ankle support while also providing good traction on both rocky and muddy trails. Several different manufacturers of hiking boots exist today along with several different types. In addition to protecting your feet from physical fatigue and impacts a good pair of hiking boots should also be water proof and breathable. For short day hikes a pair of hiking shoes may be acceptable and are much lighter than boots. Be sure to select foot wear that fits your feet properly so that their comfortable on longer hikes.

Selection of the proper hiking clothes is very important to keep cool and comfortable when hiking. Hiking pants should always be worn versus jeans as they will breathe better and are more flexible to move in. Shorts should generally not be worn as pants will better protect your legs from biting insects, scratches, sun exposure, and plants that cause itching such as poison ivy. In colder weather conditions try dressing in layers that can be removed or added in order to prevent excessive sweating.

When hiking in the wilderness off trails always make sure to bring a compass or GPS unit along. It can be very easy to become disorientated in thick vegetation or severe weather events. Before leaving your vehicle always make sure to store the current position in your GPS unit. Carrying spare batteries for the GPS unit is also a good idea.

Other items to purchase include an ergonomic backpack to carry food, sunscreen, snacks, water, maps, first aid items, and personal items. A collapsible hiking stick can also help navigating rocky terrain easier. Make sure to bring enough water along and a lot of physical exertion can dehydrate your body on the trail much faster than simply walking in the local town park.

Being prepared is the most aspect of a successful hiking trip. Make sure to pack all your items the night before or even make a simple checklist. It's also a good idea to contact a friend and tell them what your plans are just in case something goes wrong.
