Recycled Plastic Playground Equipment
The lessons we learn as children we carry with us and often repeat as adults
. "Recycle, reuse, and reduce". Who can forget the catchy song used to inspire children for years to engage in recycling items? I used to laugh at the cheesy song, but somehow even till this day it's stuck within my mind, that and long hours playing at the park with my sisters.
As an adult I longed for the day in which I could take my child to the park to play. At twenty-seven, still single, with no kids of my own I found myself pushing a stroller, and admonishing two little boys on a short walk to our neighborhood park.
As I stopped the stroller in front of a locked gate, I stood in amazement of the structure before me. It was beautiful, creative, and colorful. Instead of steel or aluminum slides with wooden handles, my eyes saw plastic that wouldn't leave splinters in the children hands. This slide could be easily cleaned if a child somehow had an accident, and couldn't make it to the bathroom in time. So what caused this new trend of purchasing recycled playground equipment to occur? The benefits of course! Through research I found that there are many benefits, such as: environmental, longevity, and cost.
Like millions of people I watched The Great Pacific Garbage Patch for the very first time watching Oprah. As I watched in amazement it became clear "Houston we have a problem!" The solution it seems was a very simple one: reuse, reduce, and recycle items such as, plastic bottles and bags, which dominates the main source of garbage within the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Reusing recycled plastic bottles and water jugs to create children playgrounds have aided in the efforts to reduce waste within our environment. Due to the fact that the recycled materials used to create recycled playground equipment won't rust, splinter, or crack, companies, schools, parents and businesses have all begun to purchase these types of playgrounds. Longevity is one of the main benefits for using recycled plastic to create playground equipment besides cost. Playground structures made from recycled plastics have been found to last twice as long as structures made from wood, and metal. Formulated around an inner steel core to enhance strength and durability of its product, it has been found to be safe and reliable.
Beware of MIB. So what exactly is MIB? It stands for moisture, insects, and bacteria. These three words are what kryptonite was to superman. Playgrounds equipment for decades have been prone to these three elements, but not anymore. These new structures can withstand varying weather conditions such as snow storms or torrential rains. Because it does not absorb moisture it will not rust, rot or mold due to extreme weather conditions. It will also not become overheated or to cold. Very little or any maintenance cost is another benefit to purchase recycled plastic play equipment. In contrast to playground equipment that need sealants or preservatives to maintain its structure, recycled plastic bypass this necessity. Resistant to moisture, insect, and bacteria, these structures are a welcomed addition to any home or community.
