Reflections on emerging retail issues post-India Retail Forum 2010
Though Indian retail continues to be highly fragmented with limited access to capital
, labor and real-estate options, the country has 9% GDP growth translating to 6% growth in retail consumption. With a young population of 1.15 billion, median age of 25.3 years and a burgeoning middle class, the demographics and socio-economic profile of the consuming masses look very attractive and promising for things to come in the near future. Essence of this transition phase in retail is that there are no tried-and-tested formulas. For the retailers, it is thus only a matter of experimentation and learning from past experience.
