Many insurance companies in California are now recognizing domestic partner relationships
and are now offering couples that are in these relationships the benefits that married couples receive.Some of these benefits include a lower rate. Many insurance companies are offering the same rate to married driver that they offer to couples that are in a domestic partner relationship. Acceptability will vary from company to company. Some carriers require that the insured be in a registered domestic partner relationship and other do not require it to be registered.
Another benefit that this offers these clients is the ability to maintain a single auto insurance policy in the household. Currently many auto insurance companies require that the person that is named as the names insured on the auto insurance policy maintains insurable interest in all vehicles that are listed as covered. By these couples that are in a domestic partner relationship being treated the same as married couples the vehicle owned are considered community property. This means that each partner can have the vehicle registered exclusively in their name and still qualify for a combined auto insurance policy.
With the combination of receiving the discount for being in a domestic partner relationship and the multivehicle discount, these couples could save as much as 30 percent compared to having separate policies.
Another benefit is that both of the partners will be able to be listed as the named insured with most of the companies. When these partners purchase a home they will be able to get the discount for having auto and home insurance with the same company regardless of which of them is the named insured on the home policy.
