Remerber The Alamo Drafthouse

In my great quest to discover everything and anything movie

, I came across a really cool idea that I hope grows in the future. The Alamo Drafthouse is a chain of movie theaters in Austin, Texas that, unbeknownst to me, regularly puts on a roadshow tour (check out: Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow 2010). They play movies at the locations where the movies were set (or are at least related to). This year seems to be even more ambitious than the past. Under the theme of the working man this tour spans the country. It starts in the sunny Torrance, California and ends, after screening a dozen films, on a rooftop in Manhattan.

Imagine watching Marlon Brando build the legend that is BRANDO in On the Waterfront while feeling the cool breeze of the Hoboken pier cut through the balmy air of August. Imagine nervously looking over your shoulder for that rooftop sniper in San Franciscos Washington Square Park while Dirty Harry plays before you. And what can be compared to the experience of watching Rocky Balboa run up the steps of the Philadelphia museum while you sit on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum? And the whole tour ends with The Godfather II playing on a rooftop in whats left of Little Italy.

Now, granted, the theme is kinda BS. Red Dawn? Jackie Brown? Robocop was a movie for the working man? I guess, but I always thought it was about a cyborg kicking-ass. And did the Blues Brothers even have jobs? Regardless, its a fun lineup of movies.

Now, maybe youre thinking, Im not a Deadhead, I cant afford to go cross-country caravan-style following some roadshow! Dont get your boxer briefs in a twist. I was thinking the same thing. One solution would be to shake your goodies on the street and hope some lonely trucker will take you from location to location asking nothing return (not advisable or likely). Another would be to select a couple screenings that you really are dying to see and make a little roadtrip yourself. Vacation rentals, provided by websites such as MetroFlats.com, are a great way to cut costs (especially if you are travelling with friends or family). Along the way you can take in sites all across America, which is much more memorable than an airplane ride (unless it was a bad one).

Im planning on hitting the Tristate trifecta: Rocky, On the Waterfront, and The Godfather II. The last two I can drive to easy but I will definitely be using Metroflats to find a place to stay in Philly. I wonder where Rocky lived...
