Renewable Energy Sources
Energy sources which come from natural thing such as air
, sun or water which can be replenished naturally are known as renewable sources of energy. You don't need to worry about them running out or harming our environment. According to research 16 per cent of the energy consumption globally comes from the renewable sources of energy. Among this 16 per cent, 10 per cent comes from the traditional use of bio mass which usually has the purpose of heating. Also 3.4 per cent comes from the use of hydro electricity. The rest 2.8 per cent includes the new renewable sources such as solar, modern biomass, wind and so on. But these new sources are actually growing on a very rapid basis.
There are basically four major areas where these renewable sources replace the conventional ones. They are the following:
Heating - in many countries the solar water heaters make a major contribution. 70 per cent of the global total is actually used in China. These systems can usually found on the multifamily apartment buildings. Around 60 million houses in China use solar water heaters. Apart from solar energy, biomass is also used for heating. In countries like Sweden, biomass is preferred for heating over conventional methods like oil. Another source which is growing on a rapid basis is geothermal energy for heating i.e. the steam from the inner layers of the earth.
Transport fuels - since 2006 in the United States of America, the oil consumption has decline and this is majorly because of the increase in use of bio fuels. Around 93 billion litres of bio fuels were produced in 2009 which if you compared with gasoline takes up about 5 per cent of the entire gasoline production in the world.
Power generation - 18 per cent of the total generation of electricity around the world is provided by bio fuels. There are various renewable power generators which are found all over the world. In fact there are some countries where majority of their power generation comes from the renewable power generators. 100 per cent in Paraguay and Iceland, 98 per cent in Norway, 86 per cent in Brazil, 62 per cent in Austria, 65 per cent in New Zealand and 54 per cent in Sweden.
Now we move onto the various forms of renewable sources of energy. First we have wind power where the airflow is used to run the wind turbines. Wind farms are usually located in the areas where the flow of wind is high. Then comes, hydropower where the energy from the water is harnessed. There are various hydel power projects all over the world harnessing the energy of water. Another common renewable source of energy includes solar energy which we have already mentioned. You also have biomass and bio fuels. And finally we have geothermal energy. All these energy sources are basically an insight into what we need to use in the future and it is important to use these energy sources for sustainable development in our world.
