Renewable energy 'is core part of power sector'

Business gas and business electricity users are likely to utilise increasing levels of energy sourced from renewable means, it has been suggested.

According to Maria McCaffery, chief executive of RenewableUK, wind and other such forms of power generation are no longer "alternative" solutions but rather are core parts of the whole system.

She added: "We are expecting to see the contribution of electricity from wind gradually increase over the next decade, to around 30 per cent of the UK's total consumption.

"This news confirms that not only are the wind farms we have built so far starting to deliver, but that UK wind farm yields are the best in Europe and comparable with established technologies such as hydro."

Her comments were made after the release of figures by the National Grid, which is an international electricity and gas company and describes itself as one of the largest investor-owned energy firms in the world.

It noted that on September 6th, the production of electricity from wind energy reached around ten per cent of all electricity delivered to consumers.

At peak time on the day, 1,860 megawatts was being generated in this fashion, with some being consumed by business gas and business electricity users.

The majority of this was generated in Scotland, which benefits from many features that make it good for situating wind turbines in, such as plenty of high ground.

Ms McCaffery went on to state: "If we added together all the wind energy projects in planning to the projects already existing and about to come on stream, we would be three-quarters of the way to reaching our 2020 targets."

She also praised the "tremendous potential of offshore wind".

The expert noted that reaching the goals set for the UK and "unleashing the colossal opportunities" that the resource brings to the country is "perfectly achievable".
