Replacing Equipment in Factories or Chemical Plants
Millwrights are general maintenance persons. They are skilled in carpentry, mechanical, machinist, and electrical. In many instances, they have to repair old equipment in factories and industrial plants. In a chemical plant, much of the equipment is mounted to a concrete slab or mounted on the side of a concrete wall. Before any work is preformed, it's strongly recommended to use proper safety equipment; everything from safety gloves, glasses, hard hats and ear protection. The process for replacing this equipment consists of the following: removing the nuts from the mounting bolts, clean underneath where the equipment was resting, also take a tap and die to clean the surface of the threads of the mounting bolts, and the threads of the nuts. Sometimes, the nuts and bolts must have the tap and die used several times before the threads are brought back to a functional state. In some instances, the threads cannot be formed back to their proper size; therefore, a larger or smaller tap and die must be used, depending on each situation. If the bolts cannot be formed back to a usable state, then these bolts must be replaced.
The process consists of pulling the mounting bolt out of the concrete and drilling new holes, which will be bigger than the previous. After that, it is recommended to use a brass hammer to place the new bolts in the new holes. It is recommended to use epoxy for extra support in holding the new bolts in the new holes, but only a small amount is necessary. It is also recommended to use a stainless steel bolt and a standard steel nut, or vice versa. The reason for this is to keep the metals from seizing together.
Next, because of the use of bigger bolts, one then must make the mounting holes on the equipment larger in order for it to fit over the mounting bolts. A step drill bit, many times, is recommended to create these new holes. Before drilling into the metal, it's suggested to use a small amount of synthetic taping oil on the step drill bit, especially when going through metal that is excessively thick. The proper way to drill into metal is to place the bit into the previous hole, put pressure on the back of the drill with the extra hand while depressing the trigger on the drill slowly. Then, let off to allow the bit and metal to cool slightly, then repeat. Repeat this process until the hole has been cut through. After the job has been completed, in order to care properly of the equipment, it's suggested to clean the tap and die set, along with the step drill bit set. This will help keep them in a ready condition in case the need to use them should arise again. Otherwise, corrosion can build up on the tools themselves and will not be able to perform properly in the future. They must then be stored in their own proper storage container, or bin. This will keep them from becoming misplaced or distorted.
