Residential Energy Audit A Must For Checking Energy Consumption
The world is gripped with power shortage problem and depletion of energy sources have aggravated the problem even more
. As a part of power saving program, emphasis is being given on the use of renewable energy and power saving electrical appliances.
An efficient method of cutting the power usage and hence reducing the cost incurred due it is by conducting Residential Energy Audit from time to time. It is called by different names like Home Energy Assessment, Comprehensive Home Assessment, Home Performance Assessment, Energy Audit etc.
Energy Audits are conducted to assess the amount of energy being consumed in the house. By doing so, one can detect the flaws in the electrical appliances being used. Moreover, Home Energy Assessment checks various areas of the house to find the place where more energy is being used. The result help people to take necessary measures to reduce energy consumption and make the house energy efficient. As power is still largely generated using coal (thermal power), Home Energy Assessment, further help in reducing environmental pollution.
Apart from assessing energy consumption, Residential Energy Audit can also give idea on how to save water. Since the scarcity of water has been witnessed for many years, saving it and using it wisely can assure the coming generations of supply of safe and clean water.
Checking and fixing air leaks or drafts in window frames, baseboards, electrical equipments etc. can save up to 30 per cent of energy consumption every year. Apart from it, proper home insulation also contributes towards saving energy. As cooling and heating equipments accounts for the maximum amount of energy consumption, it is highly recommended that the equipment be cleaned from time to time. Moreover, prior to buying a heating or cooling equipment, one should make sure that it is being bought through a trustworthy heating contractor, so that the appliance is of good quality and consume less energy. Further, a reliable contractor will provide necessary help if there is any problem in the system post installation.
An integral part of Energy Audits include checking of the wattage of the lighting equipments. Since about 10 per cent of the total used energy is consumed by the lighting equipments, it is required that those bulbs which consume less power should be used. Use of CFL bulb is highly recommended as it consumes less power. Moreover, Installation of photovoltaic cells on the roof can help in utilising the solar energy, thus cutting the energy consumption.
