The procedure is most often performed with local or topical anesthesia, and can take a few minutes or up to 30 minutes.

Restylane is made of non-animal alleviated hyaluronic acid, an organic substance present in virtually all animal life as the same molecule. As it is devoid of any extraneous chemical products, there is a minimal possibility of any infection or allergic reaction. In some patients, it can cause temporary swelling and bruising for a few days; however, these side effects are not permanent. Restylane must not be used on areas of skin where there has been skin disease, inflammation or related conditions. During the pre-treatment consultation, it is always advisable to discuss your medical history with your doctor.

Along with Restylane, medical practitioners use several other fillers such as Juvederm, Radiesse and Sculptra. Juvederm, a second generation HA, is a smooth gel that is very similar to Restylane. Radiesse is made of Calcium Hydroxylapatite, a natural mineral in your own body. It is a collagen-stimulating product that pushes body tissues to produce more collagen. Sculptra is solely a stimulatory filler which means that any change is not the result of the product itself but of the increased tissue collagen produced by the body.

Choice of the dermal filler depends on several factors such as the patients medical history, their expectations from the process, budget and the opinion of the medical practitioner performing the service.
