Retire Early: Slow And Steady With A Side Business
Retire Early: Slow And Steady With A Side Business
Don't Try To Get Rich Quick. Find A Legitimate Opportunity Online
by Michael D. Hume, M.S.
How's your retirement account these days? If you're like a lot of people in these tough times, you've lost a lot of your nest egg. Retiring early once seemed within your grasp; now, you're putting it off.
One of the best ways to hedge your bets financially, and to put away enough money to seriously consider early retirement, has always been owning a business on the side. But if your nest egg is cracked and leaking - or, worse, if you're having trouble even making ends meet - where do you come up with the resources to start or buy a business?
These days, that personal computer you have in your study at home could be the answer. It's changed everything. I guess the bad news is that a side business still requires time, energy, focus, and some bucks to invest. The good news for you, though, is that it's a lot easier than it was back when your old man was saving his money to put up a car wash in town. Your computer can get you into a legitimate online busines without nearly as much investment of time, energy, or money.
The key is to poke around in cyberspace long enough to find a legitimate business opportunity. You don't have to be a techno-geek to know how to surf the net, so you probably already have the technical know-how you need to hunt down a good online investment. Just don't be swayed by scam artists promising free secrets to effortless untold wealth. Like any legitimate business, your online venture will require some of your time, energy, and money. It's just your good fortune that you're going to need a lot less of these resources to be successful than Dad needed for that car wash.
Just getting a toe in the water? Here are a few quick suggestions:
Online profile.
If you haven't done it already, join a social networking site. If you don't know which one is best, or how to get started, check with your older kids, or (well) almost anyone who hasn't been under a boulder for the last five years! If you already have a profile set up, think about adding a second site. Also, spend some time improving your profile with a better picture or more information. One of the first steps in becoming an internet entrepreneur has nothing to do with computer technology, but everything to do with building a trustworthy online presence.
Surf around.
Find out what people are looking at on the internet. You can put any word or two in the search bar of your search engine and immediately see not only what's out there, but what other internet entrepreneurs are doing to drive traffic to their online "stores."
Find a good platform.
Again, there are a lot of scams out there. Find a good platform (I can recommend one) that offers training in all aspects of the business, supports you through the entire process from start-up to success, and offers enough money through affiliate or other programs to make it worth your while.
It's hard to count your blessings these days when your 401k account is bleeding. But unlike your dad's car wash venture, or your mom's endless cosmetic sales efforts, or even Granddad's weekend carpet-installing business, your side-business options are much less limited... and your chance to retire early much greater.
